IRSC also opted to locate at the University of Belgrade because its Faculty for Traffic and Transport Engineering, has the strongest road safety undergraduate and graduate programmes in the developing world and its academic staff provided the impetus, scientific justifications and expertise to deliver Serbia’s huge reductions in deaths and injuries. They played a critical role in transferring and adapting knowledge from other countries, establishing a systematic, scientific approach to address road safety and in persuading key decisionmakers through research and advocacy of the significant socio- economic benefits that can accrue to a country if it improves road safety. These Belgrade university academics can share their expertise and practical experience to help academics in colaborating organisations play a similar important role in developing road safety activity in their respective countries.
